Brewers Win! 6-5! Jenkins is a Hero! Coco, Too! - PLUS - A Fantastic Musical Tribute!

Loyal Readers and Devoted Brewers Fans, How Do You Like That!

A Win!

A Big Win!

A Really, Really Big Win!

Really.

Just when you thought all was lost, and some were calling for this or that player to be traded, etc. the Brewers come from behind and hold the lead to win one from the Twinkies and avoid the dreaded sweep.

But it didn't always look so good today.

No Siree Bob.

With two out in the third, Claudio Vargas seemed to be cruising along through an easy 1-2-3 inning when he gave up a single to ever dangerous Nick Punto (I kid because I love.)

Then a two-run homer by Michael Cuddyer, followed by a Justin Morneau single, walks to Torri Hunter and Lew Ford to load the bases, and a bloop single by the also dangerous Chris Heintz scoring another two to make it 4-0 Twinkies.

That was fast.

But today the Brewers came back, and it was Tony Gwynn, Jr who led off with a single, stole second, and was followed by JJ Hardy who hit a double off the wall to score Gwynn. Prince Fielder advanced Hardy to third only to have Bill Hall strike out.

Groan.

It seemed at that moment that everything that you heard or read about the Brewers this year was true: that they weren't for real; they would fold in short-order; it was only a matter of time before they were well below .500 and that the real stars of the National League Central would surge ahead.

Right.

Apparently all of those Nay-Sayers never heard of a certain Good Ol' Number 5, Mr. Geoff Jenkins.

Oh Yeah! That's What I'm Talkin' About!

Jenkins hit a single on the first pitch to score Hardy and more importantly, injected the Elixir of Hope to the despairing Brewers and their fans who suddenly found themselves on the Verge.

Way to go Geoff.

But he wasn't done yet.

Not by a long shot.

The Twins got a run back in the top of the fourth to make it 5-2 as Vargas never really looked sharp after that horrible third inning.

In the bottom of the fifth still at 5-2 Minnesota, MVP candidate JJ Hardy led off the inning with a single. Fielder flew out and Bill Hall got on base with a single, moving Hardy to second.

Can you feel it Brewers Fans?

I was in the car, driving home from the airport.

I said quietly, under my breath, "Come on Geoff, hit it out. Tie it. Right here."

And then it happened.

Oh Yeah You Did!

Jenkins hit a ball to center, just over the grasp of a leaping Torri Hunter.

Home Run!

Tie Game!

All is Not Lost!

There is Hope!

The Brewers are still in it!

And There Was Much Rejoicing!

One For All and All for One!

The crowd went crazy!

Not because Jenkins tied the game, but because he let the Brewers and their Fans Believe Again!

Thanks Geoff!  No, Thank You!

Then incredibly in the seventh, Jenkins did it again. Fielder hit a double and went to third on a wild pitch. After Bill Hall made an out, Jenkins got his third hit of the game to drive Fielder home for a total of 5 RBIs!

With a one run lead it was up to the bullpen to hold, and they did.

Kudos to Carlos Villaneuva, Matt Wise (who got the win) and yes, kudos also to Derrick Turnbow who walked the lead-off batter in the eighth, but then retired the next three batters!

Which leads to the next hero of the game and also an early MVP candidate as far as I am concerned:

A Man Called Coco!

Francisco Cordero came in to save the ninth and struck out the side!

Cordero is now 17-for-17 in saves with an ERA of 0.50.

There are those who are calling for Turnbow to be traded because he had a bad week this past week.

Hello!

The whole team had a bad week this past week.

But having Derrick Turnbow set up for Francisco Cordero is just plain sick.

When it works, of course.

But it mostly does and it mostly will.

And as of yet, Cordero looks to be one of the best closers in baseball.

You Got That Right, Coco!

What he said.

All in all, it was a great game.

Yes, a single game.

One of very many in a long season.

But this game was one of the special 40.

And that's good.

Real good.
