Brewers Win! 4-3! Fiedler Scores 3! Hits Winning Home Run! PLUS: Gagne saves! PLUS: A Fantastic Musical Tribute!

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

The Brewers found themselves in another tight game, this time unable to score a runner from third on 4 occasions.

Wow.

Still, the showed that the team can maintain its concentration and sense of purpose, and that at the end of the day, the Brewers will live or die by the bat of Prince Fielder.

Fielder scored three runs; one a beautiful suicide squeeze with bases loaded and Carlos Villaneuva (The Stash) bunting at the plate.

Stash Bunt!.jpg
Stash Bunt!

The other on a majestic home run to deep center field in the bottom of the 8th to give the Brewers the lead, and the game.

FielderWinsIt!.jpg
Letting It All Hang Out!

(Just as an aside: What bat did Prince use on that last at-bat? It was not his usual black or brown D-bat?)

And this interesting stat: The Brewers starters have not won in their last 8 starts but have a combined ERA of 2.55.

Good Pitching.

That's a start.

The Brewers as of yesterday led the league in  BA with runners in scoring position.

Who knew?

Still, they seem to leave an awful lot of runners on.

That, and the Cubs are off to their best start since 1995.

Do the math.

Even without trying to be critical of the Brewers, I know that some of you think I am being just that.

Fair enough.

Ditto, when it comes to Prince Fielder.

Duly noted.

The truth is that the Brewers have been winning more than they have been losing, but they still do not seem to be playing up to their potential, or worse, this is as good as it gets.

Either way these scenarios are cause enough for your pal Yogi to be concerned.

And that's my story, and yes, I am sticking to it.

Just sayin'.

...

And then there's this:

Knuckles!

Gagne is rapidly becoming  the Most Exciting Man in Baseball!

He pitched a very good 9th inning and despite a broken bat hit, he all but had the Marlins hitters.

Just sayin', again.

...

And for this game's Fantastic Musical Tribute!...

Happy Times!

Is This Something?

I saw this today for the first time.

Strange.

But funny.

Brewers Lose. 3-0. YoGa Does His Job! No Bats! PLUS: More Meat Taunts! PLUS: Amy Winehouse Award!

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

Your pal Yogi is at a loss for words.

!@#$!

The Brewers played poorly yesterday and lost to a team they easily had beat.

Numbers don't lie.

Gabe Kapler did not produce.

Nor did Prince Fielder.

In fact, no one did.

You have to score to win.

The Brewers somehow have lost sight of that over the last two games.

They get hits and get caught stealing.

Or thrown out stretching the hit.

Or they don't turn the double play.

Or their pitching folds in late relief.

Which brings up my guy, Yovanni Gallardo.

YoGa! Again!.jpg

This young man is simply fantastic.

YoGa possesses great poise well beyond his 22 years.

And what of the broadcast with the replay of the sweaty-faced Prince Fielder mouthing "No meat!"

?

I'll have more on this later, but let me say this, Prince Fielder is fooling no one with his proclamations regarding his dietary savvy. There is a lot of baseball to be played and unless Prince Fielder starts to supplement his diet with fish, chicken, or beef (and he may already be doing so) his will be a terrible and possibly injury-plagued season.

Just sayin'.

...

In response to what was an enticing buy ultimately disappointing game, allow your pal Yogi to inaugurate the Amy Winehouse Award.

Each time the Brewers play a lousy game, they will be rewarded with something like this:

AmyWinehouseAward!.jpg
Yikes!

Blech.

Just sayin', again.

Where Are The Brewers Now?

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

3rd!.jpg

Let's take a look at the standings:

 Chi Cubs 15 7 .682 --
 St. Louis 14 9 .609 1.5
 Milwaukee 13 9 .591 2.0
 Houston 11 12 .478 4.5
 Pittsburgh 9 13 .409 6.0
 Cincinnati 9 14 .391 6.5

Your pal Yogi's pre-season pick was that the Brewers would finish 3rd in the NL Central.

Right now I don't see how that will change all that much.

The Cubs are certainly the team to beat and I'm not sure the Cardinals are for real, but they know how to win and their pitching isn't yet at full strength, so I still have them ahead of the Brewers.

The Brewers have yet to show that they can consistently hit for power or average. Their defense is better than last year, but they still seem to make too many errors in judgment, whether at the plate, in the field, or on the bases.

Good starting pitching.

Relief that sparkles at times.

Closers that cannot be consistently relied upon.

Did you see today's game?

You know what I'm talking about.

All in all it's a fair start.

More needs to be done.

Stay tuned.

Brewers Lose. 3-1 Can't Score When It Counts. Another Late Inning Collapse.

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

So close and yet so far away.

out!.jpg

Out!

The Brewers again played a close game only to lose it in the 8th.

Baserunners but no runs.

Picked off.

Thrown out.

Ugh.

Then it was David Riske's turn to let up two runs with two outs in the top of the 8th.

Riske Business.jpg

Riske Business!

Two-Out Walk.

Walks.Kill.

Repeat after me.

Walks.Kill.

Unlike the Red Sox (who are the best team in baseball right now) when the Brewers are down you don't ever seem to think, "Oh heck, they'll come back."

When the Red Sox are down 2 runs, all they need is one baserunner and as long as Big Papi or Manny is up to bat, the game feels likely that it's going to be tied with one swing.

Alas.

And alack.

On the positive side: Ryan Braun continues to prove that he is FOR REAL, today going 3-4 with the Brewers only run. Bill Hall went 3-4, too.

On the negative side: Gabe Kapler, 0-4, with 4 LOB.

Ouch.

That, and Riske's inability to finish what he started.

Ned Yost - Mensch

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

By now you know that your pal Yogi has been critical of Derrick Turnbow's performance at times, as well as that of Ned Yost.

But I have never criticized Derrick Turnbow or Ned Yost, the person.

I have never met Ned but have said "Hi" to Derrick a few times.

Bill Schroeder (Rock) has told me that most everyone who knows Derrick thinks that he's a great young man and I have no reason to doubt that.

I am saying all of this because the insular and idiosyncratic world that is Yogi Brewer is not meant to be taken too seriously.

Tonight I am reminded of this after reading this from Tom Haudricourt at JSOnline.com:

As one might imagine from a guy who has been a punching bag for the fans for a long time, Turnbow was quite emotional after the game.

"It's unbelievable," said Turnbow. "It's been a long time. I always hoped one day I'd get another chance to get back out there with another save opportunity. I wanted to see what it felt like again.

"There are a lot of emotions going through me right now. I'm both relieved and excited. A mix of everything. I couldn't believe I got a save. I can't really describe it.

...

Everybody who covers the team knows what a great guy Turnbow is. That's what manager Ned Yost also was a bit emotional after the game, seeing something good finally happen for the big guy.

"He's a wonderful, stand-up young man," said Yost. "Yes, I feel at times people are too hard on him, for no reason.

"I have faith in him. As long as I have faith in him, he has nothing to worry about."

Save!.jpg

Nice.

Ned Yost, a real mensch.

I love this team.

Really, I do.

Brewers Win! 5-4! Two Homer From Fielder! Derrick Saves The Day! PLUS: Veggie Taunts! PLUS: A Fantastical Musical Tribute!

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

Did you see the game?

A good one to be sure.

The Brewers jumped all over Cole Hamels early scoring three runs in the first, most notably with a 2-run home by Prince Fielder.

NoMeat!.jpg
Veggie King!

Fielder would go on to hit a second 2-run blast in the bottom of the 8th, following which, he taunted the camera (and your pal Yogi) by mouthing the words "No Meat."

Well, we'll see about that.

Dave Bush pitched admirably letting up 4 runs, all on homers, but it was Mitch Stetter who pitched two scoreless innings, 7th and 8th, and then Derrick Turnbow, (The Most Exciting Man in Baseball) who closed out the game in the 9th.

A Vote of Confidence!

The key for Derrick tonight was what looked like a cut fastball (or something) that had a little bit of movement on it (down and in to the right handed batters) as well as getting the curve ball in for a strike.

Tonight's game could have been a real disaster for this early season for Ned Yost after he (again, like last year) let his pitcher bat in the 6th only to pull him after the first batter in the 7th.

!@#$%

That, and Fielder's home runs take the pressure off of Ned (and Prince) to explain Fielder's low slugging percentage.

And certainly, by Derrick closing the game successfully, Ned doesn't have to answer for his closers' early disappointments.

...

Butterfly.JPG

Butterfly Says!

I don't know about Prince and his vegetarian diet, but he still needs to lose some LBs.

And what's with the ugly mustaches? The only one who looks good with it is JJ!

Ryan Braun needs to hook up with Gabe Kapler and work out a little!

Great game tonight guys!

Thanks, Butterfly!

MLB Extra Iinninga.gif

My friends, if you don't have the MLB Extra Innings Package, and if you can afford it, get it.

Really.

Last year I had both the cable and mlb.tv package. This year I only have the cable because I don't travel like I used to.

Still, it is awesome.

It is amazing to be able to watch virtually every game of every team. In truth you don't get every gam eo r team, but it sure comes close.

The Beautiful Butterfly is a hig Red Sox fan and we have been watching the Boston games almost every nioht. And believe me, they are playing great baseball and it's been fun to watch.

Butterfly also love the San Francisco Giants. Um, not as much fun to watch, but I love being able to see so many of the teams in the National League.

That, and you get to hear all of the different broadcasters.

For my money, Rock and BA really do a great job. They are funny, they have great energy, they know the game and the Brewers players, and most importantly, they seem to like each other and are happy to be there.

Um, not so fast.

OBP is up because managers are gladly allowing Fielder to walk; first because Braun did not do a good job at clean-up, and now because there is no real strength batting 5th.

Do the math.

2008 is not just another slow start for Prince Fielder.

Looks bad.

Is bad.

Just sayin'.

Ned's Happy Place! Unicorns! Rainbows! Votes of Confidence!

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

What power does your pal Yogi have?

As if on, cue, Ned gives Derrick another vote of confidence!

We've tried to do it the other way, where you put him in a game where you're down two or three runs or up three or four runs, but we haven't had many games like that. We're not getting anywhere. So you sit down and realize that this is an All-Star closer. Get with it. Get him in the ballgame. Get him straightened out so he can help you down there."

HappLand!.jpg
Get With It! In Happy Land!

Look, I want Derrick to succeed as badly as anyone.

But let's be honest, Derrick is not an All-Star pitcher at this time.

Yes, get with it.

But with what?

And that's the question.

No one is willing to commit as to what is the problem with Derrick.

(Or for Gagne for that matter.)

I know this hasn't been mentioned before, but there is something in common between Derrick and Gagne.

!

Again, you do the math.

I'm not even sayin'.

Wow.

What a game!

Gabe (Good 'Ol #14) and Gabe (Butterfly's Pick) came through in the clutch.

Rickie Weeks went 2-5 with 3 RBI!

Prince Fielder went 3-3!

Bill Hall got the collar, 0-6.

Ouch.

But the real story is Eric Gange who blew his 4th save out of 10 appearances.

Blown.jpg

Wave Buh-Bye

Is it time to start worrying Brewers Fans?

Does your pal Yogi even need to ask such a question?

Sheesh.

Give Ned Yost credit for sticking up for his players, but at some point you have to start living in reality.

Happy Place.jpg

A Happy Place! Ned's World!

The Brew Crew blew a 5 run lead.

Oh boy.

And in case no is paying attention, the the Cubs have won 5 straight.

Still, it was a great win after two very disappointing late-inning collapses.

It's gonna' be a long season.

Nutrionist Sent to Players! Another Yogi Brewer Triumph! Still, They Can Eat What They Want!

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

Steak-gate!.jpg

Steak-Gate!

Well, maybe someone in the organization is reading Yogi Brewer!

The Brewers have kept an eye on him since. Players weigh in weekly and work closely with the team's athletic training staff to maintain strength and conditioning, but Fielder has not gotten any special attention regarding his diet, according to assistant general manager Gord Ash. The Brewers brought in a nutritionist on Monday for a presentation to players.

"We give them the information and what they do from there is pretty much up to them," Ash said. "We can control what we serve in the clubhouse and make good choices available, but we're not there to watch what they eat the rest of the day. All we can do is educate and facilitate players meeting with experts. That's what happened [Monday]."

Well, it's a start.

And on this, I have to disagree with the Skipper:

"Whatever he does is right for him," Brewers manager Ned Yost said. "Everybody wants to make a big deal out of a young man trying to eat healthy. That doesn't have anything to do with it. You can 'grease up' all you want, it's not going to help you hit home runs."

So if Prince Fielder wants to eat only apples and drink Tab it's OK because he wants to do it?

How about if Prince wants to smoke cigarettes, eat pie, drink coffee and bourbon all day, is that OK too?

No, of course not.

If you read the article, it suggests that Fielder stopped eating meat because of the practices of the meat industry, it doesn't explicitly say that he did it for his health (he may have.) In any case, with all due respect for Ned Yost, I don't think he is in a position to say if it is indeed healthy for a young athlete to stop eating meat and if it's helpful or beneficial for either his health or performance.

Having said that, it's a good first step. Someone has to be sensible here and figure out what is happening to Fielder's strength, conditioning, and performance on his new diet.

If it was my team, as either owner, manager, or teammate, I would do my utmost to make sure every player and coach was in the best physical health possible; on and off the field.

Just sayin'.

Oh Brother! Brewers Lose 4-3. Derrick Not Available For Comment.

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

Did you see tonight's game?

Wow.

Carlos Villaneuva (The Stash) pitched well enough to win.

CV's Stash.jpg
The Stash.

The Brewers almost hit well enough to win.

In fact, the Cardinals did everything they could to give the Brewers a win.

And what happened?

Corey Hart, once the Goat, and then the Hero, became the Goat again, failing to score from 3rd in the bottom of the 8th.

And then there's the small issue of Derrick Turnbow.

He looks like a man who has no idea how to pitch.

Obsessed with his compulsions: touch the hair, lift the arms, touch the tongue, tug the cap, exhale, shrug the shoulders...

Fast ball over the plate with no movement stroked for a double.

Twice.

What can be done?

I don't know.

Sports psychologist?

Witch Doctor?

Exorcism?

What?

Well, you win as a team and you lose as a team.

In this case, Corey Hart and Derrick Turnbow are going to get most of the blame.

The truth is that the Brewers lost another game they should have won. And if this continues, the season is going to be very disappointing indeed.

Just sayin'.

How Much Longer? .183!

Quick question:

When will Rickie Weeks be sent to the minors?

My guess is that unless Rickie really starts to turn things around, he will be sent down (or dealt?) no later than May 10.

Ouch.

Weeks.jpg

Come on Rickie.

I'm rooting for you!

Everybody's Doing It!

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

I am not sure what to make of this.

After reading many of Sunday's blog comments, many fans appear displeased with Eric Gagne (and Ned Yost). However, Gagne (who has blown three saves) certainly isn't the only closer having long ball issues early in the season.

Gennaro Filice of SI.com points out that both the American League and National League save leaders in 2007 have fallen on hard times in April.

Blown.jpg

Is Emmett Prosser serious?

What's his point?

Let your pal Yogi help.

3 Blown Saves out of 9 appearances.

Do the math.

It doesn't matter what anybody else in the league does.

If the Brewers want to have any chance of making the post-season, somebody on this team needs to be able to reliably save games.

'Nuff said.

Where's the Beef? Of Princes, Cabbages, and Kings.

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

Let's be honest.

Prince Fielder is not hitting up to expectations.

The question on everyone's mind is what does this have to do with with Fielder's vegetarianism?

NoMeat.jpg

The answer: Everything.

Now, as many of you know, your pal Yogi is not only a guru of baseball, but I am a neurologist and neurophysiologist, and know a great deal about muscle physiology, diet, and specifically, vegetarianism.

From the ages of 25-40, your pal Yogi was a strict vegetarian.

True.

And let me tell you, it was the stupidest thing I ever did in my life.

Going from 156 pounds as a cyclist and runner during my residency and fellowships (Yikes!) to a strapping 170 pounds as a 40 year old yogi (the yoga-doing kind.)

And then one day it hit me. I began dreaming of meat; hamburgers, steak, chopped-liver.

I am not kidding.

Dr. Jackie O (you know who I'm talkin' about) is not only a baseball great, but a genius gastroenterologist and hepatologist.

I called Dr. Jack and he advised me to try every kind of supplement, fish, beans, rice, etc.

Nothing worked.

And then I did it.

I had a steak for the first time in 15 years.

It was the greatest experience of my life.

And since then, I have never looked back.

Bigger. Harder. Stronger. Faster. Leaner. Better.

Yes, there are some athletes who can do without meat.

Mark Allen
MarkAllen.jpg
Triathlon King

Edwin Moses
edwin_moses_color.jpg
High Hurdles King

But most people can't.

Yes, my experience is n=1.

I know that.

But I also know from my professional experience is that some people need meat ( or at a minimum, fish and chicken) to maintain their muscle mass and strength.

If I were The Boss, Mark Attanasio, I would have the team physician meet with Prince now, as well as have him meet with a sports dietician (or nutritionist) and figure out what is in the best interest of Prince, and while they're at it, meet with each and every player and find out how to maximize their nutritional needs.

I have seen what these guys eats, and drink, and when, and believe me, it could be a whole lot better.

Look, I'm a 44 year old average guy, who in the span of three years went from 170 pounds to 198 pounds, able to bench press, squat, and nearly dead lift my own weight. do 30 pull-ups (partitioned), 50 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, and I did that almost exclusively on my own, except for a few months of help from my Sensei, Dominik.

Imagine what these professional athletes could accomplish with state of the art equipment, medical, nutritional, and coaching consultation.

(Note: Fielder did not consult with the Brewer's medical staff before making his extreme dietary switch.)

You are what you eat.

It's true.

In Prince's case, right now, he's a wet noodle.

Just sayin'.

A few thoughts:

Prince Fielder:  Beef, it's what for dinner. Look into it.

YoGa (my guy, Yovanni Gallardo): The real deal.

Gabe Gross:  Well played, Sir. Well played.

Jason Kendall: A nice surprise.

Ben Sheets:  Stud. Needs to stay healthy.

JJ Hardy: Stay Aggressive. And maintain a strong left side on your swing. Just sayin'.

Ryan Braun: Learning to play left field. Slow start at the plate. Not worried.

Dave Bush: The league has got his number. Does not look good.

Derrick Turnbow: Throw strikes. Repeat: Throw Strikes. The problem: Off balance on the hill.

Eric Gagne: What can I say? Jekyll and Hyde? Head Case? Tired Arm? What?

Bill Hall: Good D. Spotty Bat. Great Attitude.

Craig Counsell: Stud Lite.

Fair Use -- Tom Haudricourt and Adverse Conditions -- No Really, I Don't Think He's Kidding

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

Read This and tell me what you think.

I want to quote the whole, incredible thing, but I won't.

Still, here is most of it:

Conditions worked against Gagne

By Tom Haudricourt
Wednesday, Apr 2 2008, 12:53 PM

We did get to talk to Gagne this morning before the Brewers' second game against Chicago and he talked about the things that worked against him. He said his goggles were fogging up in the rainy weather and the mound was a bit slippery. He also thought a couple of close pitches to Derrek Lee that were called balls actually were strikes.

Despite those built-in excuses, Gagne finall said, "I just wasn't throwing strikes. There were a lot of outside things but it's not that big of a deal.

"My stuff was good. ... Things weren't going my way. It was hard for me to find the strike zone."

Gagne said he tried to take some positives from the outing, such as getting three outs in the ninth after Fukudome hit his homer.

"I blew the game, yeah, but I kept it at 3-3 with no outs," he said. "So, that was a positive for me.

I would like to comment on this but as they say, res ipse loquitor.

Look into it.

Brewers Win! 8-2! Balanced Hitting! Pitching! and Base Stealing! PLUS: A Fantastic Musical Tribute!

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

Welcome Back to Your Favorite Brewers Blog!

And what a start to this season!

Three Stolen Bases!

Ryan Braun with Three Hits and an RBI!

Plus Splendid Veteran Pitching!

SoupDealing.jpg

And yes, of course, it is too early to be talking about October. Recall that the Brewers had an 8 1/2 game lead through late June (before the dreaded Road Trip to Ruin.)

Nevertheless, it is essential to beat the Cubs as often as is possible, and as I have repeatedly written:

Every Game Counts.
Every Pitch Counts.
Every Swing Counts.
Every Throw Counts.

The real magic of baseball is the ability to play 162 games and come out on top.

Here' Ned Yost:

Brewers manager Ned Yost had a hard time saying that this early series win was not important for his young, but contending, club.

"I mean, I'm not going to say no," Yost said. "We lost our division by two games last year, so every game is important. Is it nice that we're playing the Cubs? Yeah."

I just hope that Ned reinforces this same message when the Brewers are playing the Washington Nationals, or the Pittsburgh Pirates, or the Cincinnati Reds, or San Francisco Giants, the latter most of which the Brewers got swept in San Francisco and lost 2-out-of-3 on their last home stand with the Giants.

More to the point, the Brewers need to win on the road. This cannot be emphasized enough. The Brewers terrible post-All-Star-Break slide was manifest chiefly by a complete inability to win away from Miller Park.

So no, let's not dwell too much on Game 2 of 162.

Still, the Brewers looked very good today and that's reason enough to be pleased.

Just sayin'.

...

oddsandends.jpg

Something disturbing happened in today's game:

HitByPitch.jpg

Prince Fielder was hit by a pitch TWICE today.

Let me be clear about this, and remember you heard it here first: Pitchers are going to throw at Prince Fielder.

This will be deliberate and will border on the malicious and dangerous.

Against which teams will this happen?

St. Louis, Chicago, San Francisco, Florida, possibly New York, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles.

All I'm sayin' is don't be surprised when it you see in happening.

You heard it here first.

Just sayin', again.

...

Tonight's Fantastic Musical Tribute!

Enjoy!

Throwing Strikes Counts - Shut Up! No! Really!?!?

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

Chew on this one.

Manager Ned Yost didn't mince words when asked Monday why he chose David Riske in the 10th inning over Derrick Turnbow with a one-run lead.

"I liked the way he threw strikes all spring," said Yost.

Understatement of the Year

How many times has Derrick Turnbow failed to throw strikes?

I have been in Derrick's corner for some time now, but the plain, simple, and candid truth is that despite an amazing amount of physical ability, he has yet to consistently in game situations been able to throw strikes.

Listen to me.

Derrick, throw hard but let the right handed batters make contact.

Repeat, pitch to contact.

They cannot catch up to your velocity.

And for left handed hitters, throw them strikes, or throw outside. They won't be able to tell the difference.

Believe me when I tell you.

Pitch to Contact.

Got it?

Good.

Now go out there and kick some *ss!

Just sayin'.

28 Milion Reasons to Care!

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

You have probably already seen this, but it seems worth mentioning.

Alex Rodriguez makes more this year than his hometown Florida Marlins.

Boosted by his new deal with the New York Yankees, A-Rod tops the major league baseball salary list at $28 million, according to a study of contract terms by The Associated Press. The 33 players on the Marlins' opening-day roster and disabled list total $21.8 million.

What Me Worry?

Now, I'm not sure what to say about this other than it is astonishing that one player makes more than an entire team, not the least of which is the fact that said team has won two World Series Championships in the last 11 years, more than the $300 Million Cubs.

Just sayin'.

Still, as the article points out, the average annual salary for a MLB palyer is over $3 Million.

Think about that for a moment.

Wow.

"Ordinary men doing extraordinary things."

Bill "Rock" Schroeder told me that.

So true, Brother, so true.

The Program! An Update! Get Some!

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

Many of you have written and asked me what has become of The Program, now that I am on the Disabled List.

Good question.

To be honest, it has been very difficult for me not being able to lift, run, swim, throw, bat, and do all of the "hard-core" and intensive training that I had grown so accustomed.

At this time I am still only able to use my lightweight bands and 3-10 pound weights to rehabilitate my arm and shoulder.

!@#$%

But I have been helping the Beautiful Butterfly train and the results of her working The Program have been fantastic!

This past week I ordered and received this The JC Exercise Band and DVD!

It Makes Me Want to Get Some!

This weekend Butterfly will try it out.
