Brewers Win! 9-8! Another Blown 9th! Not To Worry! Everybody Does It!

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

Wow.

What a game!

Flying McClung.jpg

Gabe (Good ‘Ol #14) and Gabe (Butterfly’s Pick) came through in the clutch.

Rickie Weeks went 2-5 with 3 RBI!

Prince Fielder went 3-3!

Bill Hall got the collar, 0-6.

Ouch.

But the real story is Eric Gange who blew his 4th save out of 10 appearances.

Wave Buh-Bye

Is it time to start worrying Brewers Fans?

Does your pal Yogi even need to ask such a question?

Sheesh.

Give Ned Yost credit for sticking up for his players, but at some point you have to start living in reality.

Happy Place.jpg

A Happy Place! Ned’s World!

The Brew Crew blew a 5 run lead.

Oh boy.

And in case no is paying attention, the the Cubs have won 5 straight.

Still, it was a great win after two very disappointing late-inning collapses.

It’s gonna’ be a long season.

Nutrionist Sent to Players! Another Yogi Brewer Triumph! Still, They Can Eat What They Want!

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

Steak-gate!.jpg

Steak-Gate!

Well, maybe someone in the organization is reading Yogi Brewer!

The Brewers have kept an eye on him since. Players weigh in weekly and work closely with the team’s athletic training staff to maintain strength and conditioning, but Fielder has not gotten any special attention regarding his diet, according to assistant general manager Gord Ash. The Brewers brought in a nutritionist on Monday for a presentation to players.

“We give them the information and what they do from there is pretty much up to them,” Ash said. “We can control what we serve in the clubhouse and make good choices available, but we’re not there to watch what they eat the rest of the day. All we can do is educate and facilitate players meeting with experts. That’s what happened [Monday].”

Well, it’s a start.

And on this, I have to disagree with the Skipper:

“Whatever he does is right for him,” Brewers manager Ned Yost said. “Everybody wants to make a big deal out of a young man trying to eat healthy. That doesn’t have anything to do with it. You can ‘grease up’ all you want, it’s not going to help you hit home runs.”

So if Prince Fielder wants to eat only apples and drink Tab it’s OK because he wants to do it?

How about if Prince wants to smoke cigarettes, eat pie, drink coffee and bourbon all day, is that OK too?

No, of course not.

If you read the article, it suggests that Fielder stopped eating meat because of the practices of the meat industry, it doesn’t explicitly say that he did it for his health (he may have.) In any case, with all due respect for Ned Yost, I don’t think he is in a position to say if it is indeed healthy for a young athlete to stop eating meat and if it’s helpful or beneficial for either his health or performance.

Having said that, it’s a good first step. Someone has to be sensible here and figure out what is happening to Fielder’s strength, conditioning, and performance on his new diet.

If it was my team, as either owner, manager, or teammate, I would do my utmost to make sure every player and coach was in the best physical health possible; on and off the field.

Just sayin’.

Oh Brother! Brewers Lose 4-3. Derrick Not Available For Comment.

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

Did you see tonight’s game?

Wow.

Carlos Villaneuva (The Stash) pitched well enough to win.

CV's Stash.jpg
The Stash.

The Brewers almost hit well enough to win.

In fact, the Cardinals did everything they could to give the Brewers a win.

And what happened?

Corey Hart, once the Goat, and then the Hero, became the Goat again, failing to score from 3rd in the bottom of the 8th.

And then there’s the small issue of Derrick Turnbow.

He looks like a man who has no idea how to pitch.

Obsessed with his compulsions: touch the hair, lift the arms, touch the tongue, tug the cap, exhale, shrug the shoulders…

Fast ball over the plate with no movement stroked for a double.

Twice.

What can be done?

I don’t know.

Sports psychologist?

Witch Doctor?

Exorcism?

What?

Well, you win as a team and you lose as a team.

In this case, Corey Hart and Derrick Turnbow are going to get most of the blame.

The truth is that the Brewers lost another game they should have won. And if this continues, the season is going to be very disappointing indeed.

Just sayin’.

How Much Longer? .183!

Quick question:

When will Rickie Weeks be sent to the minors?

My guess is that unless Rickie really starts to turn things around, he will be sent down (or dealt?) no later than May 10.

Ouch.

Weeks.jpg

Come on Rickie.

I’m rooting for you!

Everybody’s Doing It!

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

I am not sure what to make of this.

After reading many of Sunday’s blog comments, many fans appear
displeased with Eric Gagne (and Ned Yost). However, Gagne (who has
blown three saves) certainly isn’t the only closer having long ball
issues early in the season.

Gennaro Filice of SI.com points out that both the American League and National League save leaders in 2007 have fallen on hard times in April.

Blown.jpg

Is Emmett Prosser serious?

What’s his point?

Let your pal Yogi help.

3 Blown Saves out of 9 appearances.

Do the math.

It doesn’t matter what anybody else in the league does.

If the Brewers want to have any chance of making the post-season, somebody on this team needs to be able to reliably save games.

‘Nuff said.

Old News! Frank Thomas is Unhappy! Big Hurt Feelings!

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

I know you have already seen this, but come on.

What is the deal with Frank Thomas?

No Love for the Big Hurt.

He is perenially unhappy about everything.

The Blue Jays did the guy the biggest favor imaginable.

Well $20 Million favors actually.

Sheesh.

Sorry Frank.

I guess you’ll just have to deal.

Or not.

Whatever.

One Question: How Great is Manny Ramirez?

Manny!.jpg

MVP.

Just Askin’.

Where’s the Beef? Of Princes, Cabbages, and Kings.

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

Let’s be honest.

Prince Fielder is not hitting up to expectations.

The question on everyone’s mind is what does this have to do with with Fielder’s vegetarianism?

NoMeat.jpg

The answer: Everything.

Now, as many of you know, your pal Yogi is not only a guru of baseball, but I am a neurologist and neurophysiologist, and know a great deal about muscle physiology, diet, and specifically, vegetarianism.

From the ages of 25-40, your pal Yogi was a strict vegetarian.

True.

And let me tell you, it was the stupidest thing I ever did in my life.

Going from 156 pounds as a cyclist and runner during my residency and fellowships (Yikes!) to a strapping 170 pounds as a 40 year old yogi (the yoga-doing kind.)

And then one day it hit me. I began dreaming of meat; hamburgers, steak, chopped-liver.

I am not kidding.

Dr. Jackie O (you know who I’m talkin’ about) is not only a baseball great, but a genius gastroenterologist and hepatologist.

I called Dr. Jack and he advised me to try every kind of supplement, fish, beans, rice, etc.

Nothing worked.

And then I did it.

I had a steak for the first time in 15 years.

It was the greatest experience of my life.

And since then, I have never looked back.

Bigger. Harder. Stronger. Faster. Leaner. Better.

Yes, there are some athletes who can do without meat.

Mark Allen

Triathlon King

Edwin Moses

But most people can’t.

Yes, my experience is n=1.

I know that.

But I also know from my professional experience is that some people need meat ( or at a minimum, fish and chicken) to maintain their muscle mass and strength.

If I were The Boss, Mark Attanasio, I would have the team physician meet with Prince now, as well as have him meet with a sports dietician (or nutritionist) and figure out what is in the best interest of Prince, and while they’re at it, meet with each and every player and find out how to maximize their nutritional needs.

I have seen what these guys eats, and drink, and when, and believe me, it could be a whole lot better.

Look, I’m a 44 year old average guy, who in the span of three years went from 170 pounds to 198 pounds, able to bench press, squat, and nearly dead lift my own weight. do 30 pull-ups (partitioned), 50 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, and I did that almost exclusively on my own, except for a few months of help from my Sensei, Dominik.

Imagine what these professional athletes could accomplish with state of the art equipment, medical, nutritional, and coaching consultation.

(Note: Fielder did not consult with the Brewer’s medical staff before making his extreme dietary switch.)

You are what you eat.

It’s true.

In Prince’s case, right now, he’s a wet noodle.

Just sayin’.

Fair Use — Tom Haudricourt and Adverse Conditions — No Really, I Don’t Think He’s Kidding

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

Read This and tell me what you think.

I want to quote the whole, incredible thing, but I won’t.

Still, here is most of it:

Conditions worked against Gagne

By Tom Haudricourt
Wednesday, Apr 2 2008, 12:53 PM

We did get to talk to Gagne this morning before the Brewers’ second
game against Chicago and he talked about the things that worked against
him. He said his goggles were fogging up in the rainy weather and the
mound was a bit slippery. He also thought a couple of close pitches to
Derrek Lee that were called balls actually were strikes.

Despite those built-in excuses, Gagne finall said, “I just wasn’t
throwing strikes. There were a lot of outside things but it’s not that
big of a deal.

“My stuff was good. …
Things weren’t going my way. It was hard for me to find the strike
zone.”

Gagne said he tried to take some positives from the outing, such as
getting three outs in the ninth after Fukudome hit his homer.

“I blew the game, yeah, but I kept it at 3-3 with no outs,” he said. “So, that was a positive for me.

I would like to comment on this but as they say, res ipse loquitor.

Look into it.

Brewers Win! 8-2! Balanced Hitting! Pitching! and Base Stealing! PLUS: A Fantastic Musical Tribute!

Loyal Readers and Brewers Fans!

Welcome Back to Your Favorite Brewers Blog!

Your pal Yogi is coming to you tonight from the Denver International Airport.

I am on my way to California to pick up the Beautiful Butterfly and then drive to spend four days with The Grammie!

And what a start to this season!

Three Stolen Bases!

Ryan Braun with Three Hits and an RBI!

Plus Splendid Veteran Pitching!

And yes, of course, it is too early to be talking about October. Recall that the Brewers had an 8 1/2 game lead through late June (before the dreaded Road Trip to Ruin.)

Nevertheless, it is essential to beat the Cubs as often as is possible, and as I have repeatedly written:

Every Game Counts.
Every Pitch Counts.
Every Swing Counts.
Every Throw Counts.

The real magic of baseball is the ability to play 162 games and come out on top.

Here’ Ned Yost:

Brewers manager Ned Yost had a hard time saying that this early
series win was not important for his young, but contending, club.

“I mean, I’m not going to say no,” Yost said. “We lost our division by
two games last year, so every game is important. Is it nice that we’re
playing the Cubs? Yeah.”

I just hope that Ned reinforces this same message when the Brewers are playing the Washington Nationals, or the Pittsburgh Pirates, or the Cincinnati Reds, or San Francisco Giants, the latter most of which the Brewers got swept in San Francisco and lost 2-out-of-3 on their last home stand with the Giants.

More to the point, the Brewers need to win on the road. This cannot be emphasized enough. The Brewers terrible post-All-Star-Break slide was manifest chiefly by a complete inability to win away from Miller Park.

So no, let’s not dwell too much on Game 2 of 162.

Still, the Brewers looked very good today and that’s reason enough to be pleased.

Just sayin’.

oddsandends.jpg

Something disturbing happened in today’s game:

HitByPitch.jpg

Prince Fielder was hit by a pitch TWICE today.

Let me be clear about this, and remember you heard it here first: Pitchers are going to throw at Prince Fielder.

This will be deliberate and will border on the malicious and dangerous.

Against which teams will this happen?

St. Louis, Chicago, San Francisco, Florida, possibly New York, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles.

All I’m sayin’ is don’t be surprised when it you see in happening.

You heard it here first.

Just sayin’, again.
